AIMS & DESIGNS


Aims and design

The SHCP aims to achieve conservation in 3 fundamental and equally important areas:


Research and monitoring
(to identify priority areas, and to quantify and monitor key species and habitats)

Kituloensis

Protected area design and management
(to support government, parastatals and local administrations in protected area design and management)

Community-based conservation
(to help communities manage natural resources sustainably, through for example, tourism development, conservation education and collaborative management)

Current activities of the SHCP


Biodiversity inventories using target taxa to prioritise critical sites

Ecological research to determine status of, and threats to, key species and habitats

Investigation and monitoring of the trade in orchid tubers

Collaboration with, and assistance to, external researchers and research institutions

Financial and technical support to regional natural resource offices

Enrichment planting of forest reserves in Mbeya Region

Design and management of indigenous tree nurseries

Technical and financial support to local NGOs in tourism development

Assistance to villages adjacent to sites of conservation concern

Initiation of a mobile conservation education project


Technical and financial support to Tanzanian environment NGOs


Sustainable management of the orchid tuber trade


Construction of log cabins on Mt Rungwe for research and tourism use


Support to government in research and management of the Kitulo Plateau


Development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the region


Design of a regional ecological monitoring programme for upland habitats



Strategic planning, raising awareness, project development and fundraising
